Soothe Your Throat Naturally with Homemade Herbal Marshmallows
Share
As the cold season settles in, coughs and sore throats seem to find their way into our lives. If you’re looking for a natural, comforting way to ease those symptoms, I’ve got just the thing — homemade marshmallows infused with soothing marshmallow root tea! These are not only delicious but also gentle on a dry, scratchy throat.
Why Marshmallow Root? Marshmallow root has been used for centuries for its soothing, demulcent properties. It creates a protective coating that calms irritation, making it the perfect addition to a homemade marshmallow recipe.
Here’s how you can make your own batch of herbal marshmallows:
Ingredients:
1 cup water, divided
3 tbsp grass-fed gelatin
1 cup raw honey (or maple syrup for a vegan-friendly option)
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup arrowroot powder
1 tbsp marshmallow root (brewed into a strong tea with 1 cup of water, then divided)
Instructions:
Pour half (1/2 cup) of the brewed marshmallow root tea into the bowl of a stand mixer and sprinkle the gelatin on top to bloom. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.
In the meantime, add the second 1/2 cup of the brewed marshmallow root tea, honey (or maple syrup), and salt into a small pot on the stovetop with a candy thermometer. Toggle the heat between medium to high, and avoid stirring the mixture after the first minute to prevent it from boiling over. Heat the mixture to 230°-240°F (110-115° C), which takes about 10-14 minutes.
Turn the stand mixer on low to mix the gelatin, and slowly pour the hot honey mixture into the stand mixer. Slowly increase the speed to high and whip until the mixture looks and feels like pure marshmallow fluff (about 6-10 minutes). In the last minute, add in the vanilla extract.
During this time, prepare a 9x9 pan with parchment paper. Dust the parchment paper with half (1/4 cup) of the arrowroot powder.
When the marshmallow mixture is at its peak, quickly scoop it into the pan and flatten the top with an offset spatula. Dust the rest of the arrowroot powder on top.
Gently place parchment paper over the pan, and let the marshmallow set overnight.
The next day, flip the pan over onto a cutting board, remove the parchment paper, and use a sharp knife to cut the marshmallows into squares.
Enjoy the marshmallows right away, or place them into a glass jar and store them in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.
These marshmallows aren’t just for snacking — try adding them to hot tea, melting them into your favorite herbal hot chocolate, or sharing them with friends who could use a little extra comfort this season.
